“I’m sure that the little girl in that back seat was signing us…” he said next to her, staring at the blue car in front of them.

“Oh don’t you start your theories again. You don’t always have to think everyone is talking to you or about you,” she replied, rolling her eyes, but sneaking a closer look at the distinctive human outline in the car in front.

“No, I swear, this time she was signing us. I’ll drive closer,” he added, pressing down on the gas pedal.

Suddenly the car in front of them sped up too.

“Oh shit. See, told you there was something amiss. I betcha the girl was kidnapped. We have to follow.” Excitedly, he sped up and raced after the little blue car.

“Please!” she cried. “Stop! We can’t just follow a random car. There might not be anything amiss. And if there is, do you really want to get yourself involved?”

“Don’t worry. See, I’m keeping a safety distance,” he reasoned, nearly catching up with the car.

“My mum is waiting! You know how mad she gets when we’re late. We’re always late!” she put her hand on his arm, but didn’t know how to stop him. “You just missed the turn! Go back, please, just turn around right now!”

The man shook his head, determined not to lose the blue car.

All of a sudden they were washed into the traffic flow of the city. The lights changed to red and the car sped away.

“Mum’s gonna kill me,” she cried.

“Shit,” he muttered under his breath. “I think we should go to the police. Did you write down the licence plate?”

Wonder who’s right? You set up the mystery (and suspense) wonderfully.

Thank you! Who knows? Even if she was kidnapped, he clearly has no experience in following criminals.. I’m sure if she really was kidnapped, that would backfire on him if he did ever catch up with the car..

Hey we had similar ideas! I wrote about the girl possibly being kidnapped too. Great minds think alike eh? Hahaha ;)

I wonder how much of his motivation to be a super sleuth is rooted in avoiding his mother-in-law LOL. Great story :)

Interesting take. I’m not sure if he is trying to be some super sleuth and actually track down a girl he thinks is kidnapped, or if he’s just ignoring his wife and not wanting to see his mother-in-law by making up a distraction. Well written.

Thank you! He definitely believes he can actually track down the girl, but I guess there’s a part of him that is avoiding seeing his mother-in-law too… Tracking down the kidnapped girl is certainly a more exciting adventure than visiting her.
